Book Buddies
This is my last month at SAYL, which also happens to be the month SAYL is conducting its Book Buddies programs. As I mentioned earlier this semester, Book Buddies is a program where 2nd grade students who participated in Reading Buddies this year, get the opportunity to attend a 100% free book fair, where they get to choose out any books they want. Unfortunately my time at SAYL will end before I actually get to see the Book Buddies program in action, but I can totally see how a free book fair would increase a child’s desire to read. What I’m doing this week is sorting out donate books at the Book Buddies facility.
Over the course of the year SAYL receives donated books that are stored at the Book Buddies facility, which volunteers trickle in to throughout the year and sort out the good books from the bad. You really want the books to look brand new, so if any tears or rips in books won’t do for the program. Volunteers such as myself have to find books that are at 2nd grade - 3rd grade level, that have nothing to do with religion. The books also have to be in English, which so far this week has been harder than most would imagine. So far in sorting efforts, I’ve discovered books in Spanish, greek, and what I think is arabic.
